Really Effective

Neither TICK or Sound Control support the new user switching functionality of Windows XP or above. If you wish to switch users you must fully restart Windows. This will avoid issues including the incorrect sound device being selected and unable to access data files the applications need to run successfully. You may find you need to install TICK or Sound Control in each users environment. In most cases you should be able to select the same installation folder but as before installing any application it is recommended you backup your data files. For example, your TICK Log folder which is normally found in c:\program files\tick. It is also important if you are experiencing issues to ensure all users have Administration level privileges.

When a new software release is made a MD5 checksum is created. This checksum is then published together with the file to the web site. After you have downloaded the application you run the file through a MD5 checksum creator and compare this value against the value published to the web site.  If both checksums are the same it is unlikely the file has been corrupted, illegally patched or released by someone other than Really Effective. If the verification fails ensure you are downloading the file from the official site and that your download is not corrupted.

Windows NT/2000 and above introduces new security levels for users that can restrict access to the registry and files that Sound Control and TICK need to operate successfully. It is also important to ensure all users have Administrator level privileges especially whilst installing the applications. The latest versions of both Sound Control and TICK have had their setup application upgraded to allow restricted users to run the applications by adjusting the access level of the installation/data folders if required. You must still install from a user with Administrator level privileges. This fix is not available to Windows NT4 users who should ensure they continue to run the application with a user with Administrator level privileges.

If you wish to uninstall a Really Effective product select the uninstall option from either of the following locations.

Start - Programs - Application Name - Uninstall
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs

Uninstalling Sound Control will remove all related settings within the registry together with the files installed to your Program Files\Sound Control folder. If you reinstall you will need to respecify your your hot key specifications and other options.

TICK stores it settings in the registry and within the Program Files\TICK\Logs folder (older versions may also store files directly within the TICK folder). Uninstalling will remove corresponding settings from within the registry and files installed to your Program Files\TICK folder. Any files created after you installed (for example your TICK\Logs folder containing your call log should not be removed. If you reinstall you will need to respecify you time bands and other options.

Before uninstalling or reinstalling any software you should ensure you have adequate backups of your data files, installing or uninstalling Really Effective products should be no exception to this rule.

This error is usually displayed when you have not installed the latest patches and updates from Microsoft for your Operating System. The following updates are generally the minimum required to ensure the applications will run with no DLL errors. You should ensure you only install an update that is required for your Operating System. For example, the Dial Up Networking update is for Windows 95 only it is not required for other Operating Systems. Newer Operating Systems generally do not require any additional patches or updates for the applications to run. Links to available updates can also be found below.

Windows 95: Winsock v2 Update (no longer officially available)

rasapi.dll: Ensure you have a My Computer - Dial Up Networking icon.  If not install Dial Up Networking from the Windows NT installation media - rasapi.dll should then be installed.

This error message is usually displayed when you have been cut off from your Internet connection in the middle of downloading the application. You will need to delete the corrupted file from your computer and download the application again. Use the file size and MD5 information provided on the download page to ensure that the file you have downloaded is the correct size and from a reliable source. More information on using MD5 to check the integrity of the download can be found in the Related Posts section below. If you continue to download a corrupted version delete your temporary internet files and try again. If you still experience problems use the Contact Us link above and confirm you have followed these instructions and request the application to be emailed to you. Remember to indicate what application you require.

If TICK is automatically disconnecting your connection to the Internet you can reset this functionality by setting the four text boxes in the Options - Miscellaneous - Disconnect - Hang Up (Set Use Any Time) to zero - 0. If you plan to be on-line for an extended period of time ensure the Date/Time specified above these settings is corrected after you have connected.

The full rewrite of TICK is progressing well however slower than expected due to other more important commitments and continued illness. Quality, reliability and ease of updating are the most important factors in future releases which I hope all will agree are essential for success. Several people have contacted me to be early BETA testers and a release is due to made in the coming weeks to get initial feedback. The expected release due during November wll now be more likely during the Christmas period but if my condition improves this may change.
